Anyone can catch head lice (nits). Catching them has nothing to do with not being clean. Head lice spread by crawling from one person’s hair to another’s – usually between people who are in close contact, such as family or school classmates.
Scratching, scratch marks or a rash can be a sign that your child has head lice, however, not all children complain of itchy heads. If you find live head lice or eggs on a family member’s scalp, treat them and check the scalp of everyone in the house.
Our pharmacist can help recommend products to combat head lice. You may be eligible for the funded Minor Health Conditions Service if you are:
Of Māori or Pacific ethnicity
A Community Services Card (CSC) holder
A child aged 14 years or younger; or
Part of a family/household with a child under 14 years or younger and you are both experiencing these symptoms.
