Often referred to as Conjunctivitis or Pink Eye, bacterial eye infections occur in people of all ages. However, it is more common in children than adults, as bacteria and viruses are easily spread from child to child when they play.
It can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection, or from a reaction to irritants or allergens entering the eye. Typical symptoms are redness, grittiness, and excessive discharge. Because eye infections are highly contagious, early diagnosis and treatment are important to avoid infecting other people.
Our pharmacist can help recommend products to combat symptoms of bacterial eye infections. You may be eligible for the funded Minor Health Conditions Service if you are:
Of Māori or Pacific ethnicity
A Community Services Card (CSC) holder
A child aged 14 years or younger; or
Part of a family/household with a child under 14 years or younger and you are both experiencing these symptoms.
